Description

Despite the widespread assumption that anyone can successfully lose weight and keep it off, some critics of the $60-billion-a-year weight-loss industry insist that, in the long run, diets actually make us fatter. This 4-part streaming-video webcast series explores what therapists need to know about helping clients who have weight concerns.

Session 1: Is Attuned Eating the Answer to Diet Failure?

Judith Matz

Find out why dieting often makes us fatter, how attuned eating works, why weight management may be preferable to traditional weight-loss approaches, and what the physiology of dieting teaches us about why weight loss is so difficult.

Session 2: Skills for Successful Dieting

Judith Beck

Learn about the mental attitudes necessary for successful dieting and discuss the key to effective weight loss.  Help clients to learn pre-dieting skills, food selection, and how to stay motivated for life.

Session 3: Achieving Health at Every Size

Linda Bacon

Learn how science challenges the conventional views about weight and health, how weight-loss goals undermine a client's ability to achieve good health habits, how to help clients reframe their weight concerns and find what they're really seeking, and how to emphasize the importance of self-nourishment.

Session 4: Overcoming Compulsive Eating

Geneen Roth

Join us for this intriguing conversation about the roots of our relationship with food, why eating is inseparable from our core beliefs about being alive, how to trust your body, and how to demystify weight loss.

Learning Objectives - Session 1 (Judith Matz):

  1. Define the practice of attuned eating.
  2. Understand how dieting can make weight loss more difficult to achieve.
  3. Outline how weight management can help people maintain a healthy weight.

Learning Objectives - Session 2 (Judith Beck):

  1. List skills that are necessary to develop before beginning a diet.
  2. Name ways that individuals with weight-loss issues can plan to handle special-occasion eating.
  3. Explain how to help clients stay motivated in their eating habits throughout their lives.

Learning Objectives - Session 3 (Linda Bacon):

  1. Discuss how weight-loss aspirations can undercut clients' ability to attain positive, healthy habits in everyday life.
  2. Describe how to help clients reframe their distress about weight and discover what's behind their anxiety.
  3. Explain how to emphasize the importance of nourishment to clients dealing with weight-loss issues.

Learning Objectives - Session 4 (Geneen Roth):

  1. Explain how eating is comparable to our ideas about life.
  2. Discuss the source of our relationship with food.
  3. Describe how we can learn to trust our bodies.
