Objectives

  1. Summarize the research supporting Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT).
  2. Describe at least two key treatment goals of EFIT.
  3. Describe indicators that clients have moved through EFIT stages 1, 2, and 3.
  4. Assess clients’ attachment histories and pivotal developmental moments contributing to the presenting problem.
  5. Employ the five moves of the EFIT Tango. 
  6. Demonstrate tools for reprocessing emotion including reflection, validation, and interpretation.
  7. Apply the C.A.R.E model.
  8. Utilize The Experiencing Scale to monitor clients’ emotional engagement.
  9. Practice using voice, tone, and metaphor to deepen clients’ emotional experience.
  10. Communicate comfort, affirmation, and support to clients as they encounter core emotional vulnerability.
  11. Create imaginal encounters with key attachment figures to help clients more clearly identify and express their emotional needs.
  12. Summarize imaginal encounters reorganize clients’ sense of self and other.
  13. Make a plan for management of triggers, anniversaries, exposure to new trauma, and any other situation that may cause symptom aggravation.
