This one-hour presentation offers a way to embrace two complimentary frameworks: the science of early attachment relationships and the practice of healing within Internal Family Systems Therapy. Participants will be invited to explore ideas about how our early relationships shape the way the mind and brain develop and how we learn to adapt and survive from our young years into adult lives. These attachment strategies when viewed through the IFS lens can offer immense insight into how we connect to ourselves and to others. According to the IFS framework, ‘the parts of us’ develop their strategies as required for survival at the time of injury. Memories, whether “Large-T traumas” like war or “small-t traumas” like childhood neglect, along with the beliefs, emotions, images, and sensations that are connected to these painful experiences are encapsulated and carried as burdens by our parts. These burdens can persist throughout our lives, shaping how we think, feel and behave, ultimately, enlisting our parts to protect, prevent and soothe at all cost. The integration of these two profound frameworks is a natural coming together: attachment informs the science-based ideas of relationships, IFS therapy beautifully guides us inwards to connect to all our parts, enhancing more secure relationships inside and outside.

Loranie Leas, DPsych, MAPS, is a clinical/health psychologist and psychology board approved supervisor with extensive experience in working with a diverse range of adults and group therapy programs. With over 17 years of practice, Loranie has enjoyed working across community mental health, corrective services, inpatient and outpatient hospital settings and private practice. Her areas of special interest include complex trauma, perinatal mental health, parenting/families, life transition and adjustment issues, chronic illnesses/pain management and loss and grief issues.
