September/October 2022: Age Limit 65: Growing Old in an Ageist Society

This issue looks at the subject of doing therapy with older adults, including navigating ageism and other challenges that come with growing older. It also confronts our field’s limited experience in working with older adults, and how even therapists are susceptible to myths and biases because of it. Pieces cover debunking myths about aging, how our beliefs about aging affect our wellbeing, the new ways that elder parents and adult children are interacting, therapy for people with dementia, couples therapy with older adults, and discussing sex and intimacy with older adults. Other pieces include an examination of the aversion to exposure therapy, a look at the issue of medical trauma and how to treat it, and a case study about working with gender non-conforming kids and their parents.
